MMGT3 Interlloy Wilson REX B12H 2016 side med3 Having shown great pace over the last few editions of the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12-Hour, Melbourne’s M-Motorsport are heading into the 2016 running of the event intent on taking the fight to the top teams as the first major GT3 event of the year gets underway in just over one week’s time.

With two experienced Bathurst V8 Supercar campaigners behind the wheel combined with the two drivers that will lead the team in the Australian GT Championship and the Australian Endurance Championship, team-owner Justin McMillan believes the Interlloy/Wilson Storage Lamborghini has the right mix of experience and speed.

“Over the last couple of years at Bathurst we’ve been right in the mix early, and have actually led the race, so we have that experience to draw on,” he explained.

“Experienced Bathurst campaigners Dale Wood and John McIntyre will anchor the team, whilst Dale’s younger brother Glen and I will back them up.

“Dale always rises to the occasion in the Bathurst 1000 and he was fast when he drove with us ahead of our shortened race in 2014, whilst John has proven fast on the mountain in the past and was strong there last year in the Trass Family Ferrari.

“As for Glen, well he’s been a revelation since joining the team last year where he was quick at Sydney, Sandown and Highlands, and whilst he’s not competed at Bathurst before, he was quick in New Zealand last year despite having no prior event experience, and actually handed me the car in the lead in the AGT final. He’s also got Dale to draw on for experience, and we’ve got a bit of time to dial ourselves in with more than five hours practice.

“I’ve been quicker every time I’ve been there with 2016 my fifth Bathurst event, and I’m happy to say I’ve completed every session I’ve started.

“We’re also going to run our incumbent Gallardo FL2 as opposed to the new Extenso that is on its way from Reiter Engineering right now. Potential delays and issues with running a brand new car with no time to test ahead of the event ultimately made the decision for us.

“We saw last year in the final rounds of AGT that the FL2 was as quick as anything else in the field, and it’s a known product, we’ve been running one for three seasons now.

“After the fire at Highlands which was mostly superficial, the car has had a complete birthday and is almost new and good to go. We’ve tested, and both Glen and I had some pretty serious pace at Phillip Island, so I think it’s going to be an exceptional event for the M-Motorsport/Interlloy team.”

For the younger Wood, despite his success in a variety of cars over the years, this year’s Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12-Hour will be his maiden race on ‘the Mountain’.

“I’ve done plenty of laps on foot with track walks over the years, and a lot of miles on the simulator, but I expect it’s all going to be very different the first time out the gate.

“Fortunately I’ve done quite a few miles in the car now, and am pretty relaxed behind the wheel, so that’s an advantage, it will just come down to logging laps ahead of the race.

“I’m excited but 100% aware of the challenge, and at Bathurst there are so many of them - from managing traffic, to patience, to knowing when to charge and when to conserve, there’s going to be a lot to take in, but I’m fortunate to have Dale’s experience to draw on, and I’m sure John and Justin will have plenty of tips for me too.

“It’s funny too - despite the fact that Dale has plenty of V8 Supercar miles around Bathurst, he’s never actually driven a race lap in the Gallardo, despite having been entered for the 2014 12-Hour and the Highlands 101 last year. On both occasions the car was retired before he got a chance to turn any race miles, so I know he’s pumped about getting behind the wheel and having a real crack at the Mountain in anger.

“I can’t wait to get there, and I can’t thank my supporters enough - especially Wilson Storage - for the chance to not just join the team for Bathurst, but also the complete Australian GT and Australian Endurance Championship events this year in the new Extenso, it’s going to be a season to remember!”

For McIntyre, a return to Bathurst 12-months after making his GT3 debut at the mountain, comes a chance to fulfill the promise he showed in the Trass Family Ferrari, and the experienced Touring Car veteran is looking forward to rejoining the M-Motorsport team.

“Any time you get to drive a GT3 spec car around Bathurst is a highlight of your racing career.” McIntyre admitted. “I am already incredibly excited to go to Bathurst again. My expectations will really only formalise as we go through the weekend because it is such a different environment in regards to the circuit, cars, mix of teams and drivers and the crazy changing conditions like driving in the dark avoiding Kangaroos!

“We do have a very strong driver line-up. Everyone is either experienced at Bathurst or experienced in the #48 Gallardo or a combination of both. Last year I went there with a rookie team with two rookies drivers and after eight hours we were well in contention for a top 10. But we didn’t finish so it was all theoretical. If we can keep the car clean for 11.5 hours we will be in the top 10 and with a genuine chance of a podium in the AM category.” Opening practice for the 2016 Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12-Hour gets underway at 8:20am on Friday, 5 February, with the first of five practice sessions totaling five and a half hours ahead of qualifying on Saturday afternoon and the main event - the Bathurst 12-Hour -which begins in the early morning light at 5:45am on Sunday, 7 February.

Two-car assault for M-Motorsport in Sydney

This weekend the M-Motorsport team will return to Sydney Motorsport Park [SMP] for the fourth round of the Australian GT Championship, although it will be with two cars, and a very different driver lineup to the previous three rounds of the 2015 season.

Team-leader Justin McMillan will step down from the Interlloy/M-Motorsport Chevrolet Camaro GT3 to take over the reigns of the Lamborghini Gallardo FL2 GT3 he campaigned during the 2014 championship, and with a new co-driver, and greater confidence as a result of working with a new car all this season, the Victorian is expecting a solid run in the two scheduled 60-minute races.

“There has been a bit of a shake-up in the team since Townsville,” McMillan confirmed. “As a result, I’ll jump back in the M-Motorsport Lamborghini, which will give us the chance to run two Interlloy liveried cars for the event.

“Glen Wood - the younger brother of former M-Motorsport driver and current V8 Supercar regular, Dale - was keen to drive in Australian GT with us, and thanks to some support from Wilson Security and Hi-Tec Oils, he’ll have that chance.

“At the same time, Nathan Morcom was looking to continue in the series after running with M-Motorsport at Phillip Island, so we had a bit of a shuffle, and I elected to step out of the Camaro to give Jack and Nathan a shot at delivering a strong outright result.

“Jack’s clearly quick around there - in fact he’s the lap record holder (1:27.9783) after winning both races comfortably in 2013, and we’ve done some development work with the car, so with two young hot-shots behind the wheel, they could be a dark horse, whilst Glen - who has plenty of experience in Formula Ford and some in V8 Supercars -will drive with me, and I think he too will surprise a few people with his pace.

“I’m more comfortable in some ways with the Lamborghini, because I’ve had two full seasons with the car, and last year at Sydney, Richo [Steve Richards] and I finished on the podium in race one, and fifth in race two to be classified third for the round, so I’m hoping we might be able to emulate that and potentially move a bit higher up the grid, especially as Glen doesn’t incur the heavy compulsory pit stop penalty that Richo had.

“We’re also expecting a big attendance from Interlloy staff and customers at the event, so we are keen to put on a big show for them. I think it’s going to be an interesting weekend!”

Opening practice for the penultimate Australian round of the Championship will kick off on Friday morning at 8:25am, ahead of two qualifying sessions, before race one at 12:45pm on Saturday (22 August) and race two on Sunday at 9:20am (23 August), all sessions will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 5.

Ahead of the second round of the Australian GT Championship at Phillip Island in late May [22-24], the M-Motorsport team of Justin McMillan has revealed that 2013 Australian GT sensation Jack Le Brocq will join him in the Interlloy Camaro for the remainder of the 2015 season.

“I’m excited by what Jack brings to the team,” McMillan admitted of the announcement. “He showed in 2013 that he was a consistent GT race winner, taking four consecutive victories in his only drive in the series, so I’m sure he’ll be able to make the transition across to the Camaro with no trouble at all.”

Le Brocq replaces former F1 driver Tomas Enge who joined the team for the opening round in Adelaide, however due to his international commitments, Enge has been forced to withdraw from the Australian GT program, paving the way for the 2012 Australian Formula Ford champion to drive alongside McMillan in the Interlloy Camaro.

“I’m so pumped about this opportunity with M-Motorsport,” said Le Brocq.
 “The Camaro is an awesome machine and after testing at Phillip Island last week, I can’t wait to get racing.

“The cars are still quite new so it’s also a chance to help in the development phase, which is something I really enjoy.”

Aside from his involvement with McMillan in the new 7.9-litre, 650-horsepower Interlloy Camaro, Le Brocq will continue his 2015 Dunlop Development Series [V8 Supercar] program with Matthew White Motorsport, as well as his relationship with Erebus Motorsport in a development role.

Le Brocq’s chance to test the new car at Phillip Island also coincided with Reiter Engineering’s return to the country to undertake further development with the iconic Camaro GT car, with McMillan, Dale Paterson and Steven Richards turning laps of the Grand Prix circuit ahead of the second round of the championships - the ‘101’ endurance race on May 22-24.

With the brand new Interlloy Chevrolet Camaro GT3 arriving in the country just days out from the opening round of the 2015 Australian GT season, the Melbourne-based M-Motorsport team knew they were up against it heading to Adelaide, but whilst the results might not have been everything they were looking for, there were few people that left the Clipsal 500 event unaware of the big American inspired GT3 racer.

“When we made the decision to change from the Lamborghini to the Camaro for the 2015 season, we knew that time was against us,” M-Motorsport team-boss Justin McMillan admitted.

“The Camaro is still a relatively new car on the world scene, and Reiter Engineering (who are also responsible for the construction of the successful Lamborghini Gallardo GT3) needed to finish the two cars they sent to Australia just prior to the start of the season, so we had little time to ‘shake’ the cars down. Almost inevitably, we struck teething problems throughout the event.

“There seems to be a number of small electrical pulse issues which Reiter themselves have admitted may well be due to the nature of the Adelaide street circuit and the high kerbs, as they haven’t discovered these problems in Europe or in Thailand where the other Camaros are competing. Ultimately it sidelined us at times during practice - both cars - and again, frustratingly, during qualifying, neither Dale Paterson’s Camaro, nor mine were able to record a good qualifying time.

“That said, both Tomas [Enge] and Steve [Richards] were able to sit on top of the practice times during both sessions, despite limited laps - in the end I think we were fourth fastest and seventh fastest of the 34 cars after practice was completed, so there was no question the speed is there.”

“It’s a pity we didn’t have time to run the cars and iron out any of the problems before Clipsal, because these cars would really have starred here if we’d been able to have a clean run,” three-time Bathurst 1000 champion Steven Richards admitted.

Both Richards and Reiter Engineering favourite Tomas Enge (former F1/Indycar driver) were fast during the opening 30-mninute race, scything through the field from the back, Richards going from 28th to ninth, Enge from 34th to 12th, despite almost a third of the race running behind the Safety Car and two hefty compulsory pit stop penalties by virtue of their status as professional drivers.

“That was fun,” Enge beamed post-race. “I was being a little cautious with the slower cars, so just missed the top ten, but as we predicted, these cars are perfectly suited to the nature of this circuit, with some very slow speed corners running onto long straights.

“I was able to follow Richo once we were through the slower cars, then we had the Safety Car period and pitted, but with our 45-second time penalty because of our driver gradings, we lost all those positions again. So we started from the back again after the restart and worked our way forward.”

Sadly for Enge, he would not turn another lap of the Adelaide Parklands circuit, after team-mate Justin McMillan suffered an ECU failure in the second 60-minute race in which Enge was expected to take over at the compulsory pit stop, whilst the Paterson/Richards Camaro was sidelined with its own electrical issues.

Fortunately Reiter Engineering had sent engineering staff to the event to oversee the operation of the two cars, providing M-Motorsport with valuable support to locate and rectify the problems, something they were able to do ahead of the final 30-minute race on Sunday morning where McMillan and Paterson would once again start rear of field, a position which ultimately kept them clear of the impending drama at the front of the field.

A cautious start by the two Sareni Camaros on the run to turn one proved to be the right strategy, as they entered the relatively blind turn one chicane to the scene of one of the biggest accidents in Australian GT history after the leading Ferrari struck the barriers on the outside of the chicane, before bouncing back across into the path of the chasing pack.

Neither Camaro was damaged in the incident, but with the field circulating behind the Safety Car for almost half the race, overtaking opportunities were limited, McMillan ultimately working his way through for 17th and Paterson 20th.

“We’ve still got a couple of small issues, but we’re getting there with the car,” McMillan explained post-race. “It was fastest outright through the speed trap, so we’re pretty impressed with the speed the car has, we just have to fix those couple of new car issues.

“In conjunction with Reiter Engineering, we’re going to undertake a two-day test at Phillip Island in the next few weeks and we’ll get this car well and truly sorted.”

Whilst a tough weekend for the M-Motorsport team, there were a number of positives to take away from the event, notably the fan reaction to the big 7.9-litre V8 and the attention the car received every time it hit the circuit.

“I’ve never seen so many people come up and ask for photos or to have a look at the car,” McMillan admitted. “They all commented on how good it looked, and on the sound - something which has to be heard to be believed!”

For the M-Motorsport team, the focus now shifts to test-mode ahead of the only endurance race in the 2015 Australian GT Championship, the 101-lap race at Phillip Island on 22-24 May.

Just recently M-Motorsport team leader Justin McMillan revealed that he would be moving from the Lamborghini Gallardo that took him to fourth place in the 2014 Australian GT Championship, to a Reiter Engineering prepared Chevrolet Camaro GT3 with a former Formula One driver sharing the driving duties.

Whilst fantastic news to the ever-growing category, what the news did was prompt questions about where the pole-sitting Lamborghini would go for season 2015, and what of McMillan’s 2014 co-driver Steven Richards.. Now, all can be revealed.

For the 2015 Australian GT Championship presented by Pirelli, the M-Motorsport team will campaign three cars - an Interlloy liveried Camaro GT3 for McMillan and Tomas Enge, a second Camaro for Victorian Dale Paterson and Richards, and their Gallardo FL2 GT3 for Queensland’s John Magro.

“I’ve been talking to Dale [Paterson] for some time about running the Camaro,” McMillan explained. “He was one of the first drivers to make contact after we’d done the deal with Reiter Engineering to be the agent for this part of the world for the Sareni Camaro.

“He also came to New Zealand to have a look first hand at the Inky Tulloch Camaro and was impressed with how it went and the feedback he got from Inky and Craig Lowndes who shared the car at Highlands.

“To be honest, that event changed my mind too about my direction moving forward, and after discussions with Reiter in Germany, and with Steve, we elected to make a change from the Lamborghini and assist in the development of the Camaro with a two-car team.

“What that meant though was that we had a Gallardo that we weren’t going to run after the Bathurst 12-Hour, and as soon as I started making noises about leasing that I was inundated with calls.

“In the end John Magro was looking for a drive, and together with his supporters, they put a deal to me that was too good to refuse, which meant that we were able to build M-Motorsport into a three car team for the 2015 season.”

For Magro the deal allows the former open-wheel star to return to AGT after a stint in the Trophy Class alongside fellow Queenslander Ockert Fourie last season.

“Ockert unfortunately has been forced to sit out the bulk of the coming season because of a medical condition,” Magro explained. “That meant his car would also be out of action for much of the year, and as a result I needed to find an alternative.

“I looked at a number of options, but in the end, the Lamborghini provided not only the best package, but an opportunity to race with the front runners and go after the Championship.

“I’m really looking forward to it, I can’t thank M-Motorsport enough for the opportunity. Australian GT is a great category and I am very privileged to be a part of it.”

Whilst Magro’s performance in 2014 proved that he can expect to be an outright threat this season, so too M-Motorsport’s third entry, the #70 DPM Motorsport Camaro of 2014 part-timer Dale Paterson.

“The minute Justin revealed the new Camaro GT3 I knew I had to have one,” Paterson reflected.

“It is everything I want in a race car and more.. DPM Motorsport is predominantly an engine tuning and high performance business that works for the most part with Chevrolet and Holden products, so the Camaro fits exactly what I’m looking for on a number of levels.

“Justin and the M-Motorsport team have helped me immensely over the last six months in putting the deal together, and it became even sweeter just recently when they revealed that Richo would also be available to drive with me.

“I love the car and I think at somewhere like Clipsal or Townsville we’ll be right in the mix, but it’s new to me too, so I’ll be pushing hard to get the most out of it but I’ll also be looking to finish every race because that’s what is important in achieving results.”

Magro and Paterson still have six weeks to wait until the opening round of the 2015 Australian GT Championship presented by Pirelli on the streets of Adelaide, although for the M-Motorsport team, their season starts with the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12-Hour in just under weeks where McMillan and Richards will be joined by New Zealander Craig Baird in the #48 Interlloy Lamborghini.

Australian-based M-Motorsport came into the final round of the Australian GT Championship presented by Pirelli looking for a solid end to their 2014 campaign, but whilst New Zealand born Steven Richards and M-Motorsport team-boss Justin McMillan were looking like a real chance for a podium result, so too were series rookies Inky Tulloch and Craig Lowndes in the stunning new Reiter Engineering-built Camaro GT3.

With the two Red Bull Racing Australia endurance drivers competing for the M-Motorsport team, there was always going to be plenty of focus on the V8 Supercar stars, and they delivered, both cars making the Highlands 101 podium, McMillan and Richards outright (third) and Tulloch/Lowndes as part of the New Zealand Series (first and fifth outright), whilst the team also celebrated the Ross Lilley/Paul Kelly Koala Furniture Gallardo FL2 making in three cars in the top seven.

“I couldn’t be happier,” Justin McMillan beamed post-Highlands 101. “I finished fourth in the Championship Class in Australian GT yesterday after a tough season that saw us start from pole three times in six rounds, then Steve and I backed up with a podium in the three-hour 101. On top of that Inky and Craig were right in the mix and they finished a strong fifth in the 101, whilst Ross and Paul also made it home inside the top ten. For us now it’s on to season 2015, and I think what we’ve learnt this year will make us serious title contenders next season, and that’s the goal, podiums and victories!”

Former Bathurst 1000 champion and two-time Australian GT pole-sitter Steve Richards too was all praise for the team’s efforts in 2014.

“You have to remember, we’re a young team coming into a series against some very seasoned professionals, so to finish as strongly as we have is testament to the guys in the crew, and also Justin’s ongoing development as a driver,” Richards said. “This weekend you also saw some of the best drivers in the region competing, guys with V8 Supercar experience, all of whom were battling at the front of the field, so to compete against, and in some cases, defeat these drivers was for me a great result for M-Motorsport. On top of that we also saw the debut of the Camaro, and to have Inky and Craig running so strongly at the front of the field was outstanding. We’d tested the car and knew it would be strong, but there’s no better test than competing against other teams and the Camaro stood up to the challenge, and it stood up to it strongly.”

“The car’s [Camaro] great, it’s got a lot of grunt,” Lowndes admitted with his trademark smile post-race. “It hung in there, it was consistent, the engine was strong, the gearbox was good - it still needs a little more finessing, but overall for it’s first major outing it was a solid car.

“We tried to make it an easy car for Inky [Tulloch] and with that he actually went faster. He did his fastest lap time in the race so he became more comfortable - so as we stepped the car up, he stepped up with it.

“As a gentleman’s car I think it’s right up there to be honest, it’s a very easy car to drive, it’s a very forgiving car - you can step it out and have a bit of fun like you can with a V8 Supercar but it doesn’t snap on you like the Ferrari does. You can’t afford to step the Ferrari out too much otherwise it’s going to bite you, but the Camaro is a very forgiving car. There’s no doubt it’s got great potential - it needs more time - but we’ve progressed the car very well over the last couple of days.

“As for tyre wear, one of the unknowns coming into the event, I was actually quite surprised. We did yesterday’s two races [2x 40-minutes] on the same set of Pirelli’s and they were starting to go off a little bit towards the end of the second race, so I was a little bit uncertain how the 101 would go, but I think Inky did 47-laps in his first stint, then I jumped in and we only changed rears and kept going for another 40-something laps and the fronts hung in there. Then for the last 20 laps we put fresh rubber all around and away we went.

“The car for the size of it - it looks big and heavy - it actually did look after its tyres so I was really impressed.”

With the 2014 Australian GT Championship at its conclusion, attention now turns to the 2015 Bathurst 12-Hour [6-8 February] where M-Motorsport will field their Interlloy Lamborghini Gallardo FL2 with McMillan, Richards and Craig Baird at the wheel, the trio hoping to capitalise on what had been an outstanding start to the 2013 event with Richards leading for a number of laps.

“It’s an exciting time to be involved in GT racing,” McMillan admitted. “We’ve learnt a lot this year getting the Interlloy Gallardo up to speed and that showed with our end of season results where we were on the podium at every event, whilst the Camaro showed itself to be a competitive car on debut in New Zealand and that already has the phone ringing, so I think we’ll be in for a busy season in 2015.”

2013 Lamborghini Gallardo FL2 GT3
The Reiter Engineering built Lamborghini Gallardo LP600+ (FL2) debuted in 2013 as the flagship for the Italian manufacturer in GT3 competition. Powered by a mid-mounted 5.2-litre V10 with around 600bhp, the FL2 is the last of the Gallardo line ahead of its replacement in 2015 by the new Huracan GT3.

Chevrolet Camaro GT3
The brainchild of Hans Reiter, the Camaro GT3 has been in development since 2013. Powered by a front-engined 7.9-litre Chevrolet V8, it is one of the most powerful GT3 cars in the world with almost 650bhp and 800Nm of torque. During 2014 the car has proven successful in ADAC GT Masters in Germany and is a regular podium finisher.

The M-Motorsport Interlloy Lamborghini Gallardo of Justin McMillan and Steve Richards has been one of the standouts in the 2014 Australian GT Championship presented by Pirelli, claiming two impressive pole position trophies in the four rounds contested to date, but the hard-working Melbourne-based team knew that their maiden series podium was only a matter of time, and in Sydney they achieved that milestone.

“We’re a relatively young team racing against a string of professional teams that have been involved in GT racing for years,” team-boss Justin McMillan explained.

“We know we have the equipment, and in Steve Richards we have a driver capable of winning, but these things take time, especially with a new team. So far this year we’d been on the pole twice, and run strongly at the front of the field, but little niggling issues have caught us out.

“We were in contention for a podium at the season opener in Sandown, but an incident whilst I was fighting over second eliminated us, but at the same time, it gave us the momentum we carried into Sydney and a result that I’m particularly proud of.”

A ride day for Interlloy and their clients just two weeks out from the event at Sydney Motorsport Park gave McMillan some serious miles around the 18-turn, 4.5-kilometre venue, although most of those laps were contested in the team’s Freem Gallardo Super Trofeo, but despite the difference in performance between the two cars, both McMillan and Richards were quick through practice in Sydney.

McMillan posted one of his best ever laps of the Eastern Creek venue in the opening practice on a slippery surface and old rubber, before Richards put the gorgeous black and orange Lamborghini on top in session two.

In qualifying both drivers improved their pace, but were unable to get a clear lap, although with an increased pit-stop penalty for every row further towards the front of the field, they also decided that strategy would allow them to stop as much as ten seconds shorter than the teams in front of them, elevating them up the order during the compulsory stop.

McMillan started the car in race one, and was running strongly with the lead pack ahead of a Safety Car period which fell just as the compulsory pit stop [CPS] window opened. Unfortunately for the M-Motorsport team, by virtue of Steve Richards status as a ‘professional’ driver, McMillan was unable to stop until he had completed 45% of race distance, all but negating any advantage that many of their rivals achieved during their stops.

Despite this Richards charged from 14th to 11th within half a lap of the Safety Car pulling off the circuit, but it soon returned after early race leader Richard Muscat rolled to a stop at turn 18.

After three laps the Safety Car returned to pit lane and the race re-started with around 15 minutes remaining, Richards charging through the field to battle the Trophy Class Audis of James Winslow and Nathan Antunes who ultimately elected to let the reigning Bathurst 1000 champion through in the closing stages.

Punching out some of the fastest laps of the race, Richards caught the tail of Klark Quinn on the final lap to cross the line just six tenths of a second from P2, and less than six seconds from the race lead, negating an 18-second deficit across the closing laps.

“The car felt great, and Justin did a brilliant job, but we lost out on the pit stop,” Richards explained. “If the Safety Car had come seven or eight minutes later, we’d have been right in the mix and every chance of taking the win, but that’s the way it goes, sometimes the rules work with you, sometimes they don’t, but it’s a great results regardless and testament to Justin’s hard work and that of the whole M-Motorsport crew.”

Richards was back behind the wheel to start the second one-hour race, and he had the crowd on their feet, charging to the front to lead into the CPS, handing McMillan the car for the final leg, the two-time Victorian State Series Champion working his way back to fifth ahead of the flag having allowed the flying John Bowe through on the final lap.

“I could see Bowey coming, and I wasn’t going to risk our podium result, so I let him through,” McMillan explained post-race. “This was what we’d been working for all year, and it falls perfectly into place with our long term plans for the team. 2014 was about consolidation and getting onto the podium regularly. I still have a lot to learn, and I’m doing my best to juggle my work commitments with time behind the wheel because our goal is obviously the championship, and I think we’re heading in the right direction to be title contenders perhaps as early as 2015.”

“I’m very happy with that,” Richards added. “Justin’s drive was the best I've seen from him, but for me, what is really exciting is his improvement over the last 12 months. 18 months ago he was racing at State level, so this podium is a great testament to him."

For the M-Motorsport team the focus returns once more to Sandown in Melbourne (12-14 September), the scene of their maiden pole-position for the 2014 season, and a circuit both Richards and McMillan know intimately for the penultimate round of the Australian GT Championship presented by Pirelli.

The Sydney round of the Australian GT Championship will be telecast on Channel 7/7mate in the coming two weeks (check local guides for details - expected to be Sunday afternoon).

 The M-Motorsport team may have just narrowly missed the championship class podium during the third round of the Australian GT Championship on the streets of Townsville, but they bagged valuable series points, took pole position in qualifying, and packed away two straight Gallardo FL2s by the end of the weekend.

After the frustrations of Sandown and Phillip Island, the main focus for the team across the three 40-minute compulsory pit stop [CPS] races, was to finish, gain valuable experience, and gain as many points as possible.

Having turned laps at the venue in the past in both V8 Supercars and Carrera Cup, Steve Richards went out in the opening practice session to establish a good benchmark for the Interlloy Lamborghini, before heading back to his Type 991 Porsche to contest the one-make Carrera Cup category, leaving the bulk of practice to car owner McMillan.

McMillan spent much of the two sessions coming to terms with the 13-turn, 2.85-kilometre layout, running on old rubber before a late change to new tyres to acclimatise himself ahead of qualifying.

“I got one quick lap in, and it was comfortable,” McMillan beamed afterwards. “I’m not trying to do anything dramatic, just creep up on it.. Richo and I spoke at length after the disappointment of Sandown and agreed that we wanted to finish every race, and that’s the plan this weekend.”

With ‘roaded’ Pirellis fitted to the gorgeous black and orange Interlloy Gallardo ahead of qualifying, Richards went out on a mission, and out-paced points leader Richard Muscat in the Mercedes, former V8 Supercar rival Tony D’Alberto in the Ferrari and reigning champion Klark Quinn in the McLaren to take pole position by four tenths of a second, in the process improving the 2011 qualifying record by almost two seconds.

“That was comfortable,” Richards admitted afterwards. “Nothing dramatic, just comfortable. I got held up a little, and probably could have gone at best half a second faster, but that will do. Now it’s down to three races, and three finishes..!”

Richards started the opening 40-minute race on Saturday morning, immediately grabbing the lead and driving away from the pack with points-leader Muscat in tow, all the way to the compulsory pit stop. McMillan rejoined in fourth place, and was immediately under attack from the Audis of Steve McLaughlan and John Magro.

Moving to the extreme outside of the track after leaving the pit exit, McMillan expected the two Audis to pass him under brakes for turn one, instead he was hit with an image he just wasn’t prepared for..

“I heard a god almighty bang, like I was in the middle of an accident, then saw two Audis fly across the circuit in front of me and hard into the outside wall,” he recounted. “I did everything I could to avoid them, and came to a stop in the end to make sure I didn’t clean up the trail of debris they left down the track.

“After that it was understandably a Safety Car period, so for the bulk of the race I wasn’t able to maintain the gap Richo had given me to the guys behind, so ultimately one of the Koundouris Porsches dive-bombed me late in the race, and I let him go.”

Fifth, and with no discernable damage, the Interlloy team celebrated their first race on the Townsville streets, a celebration which included Ross Lilley in the team’s 2013 car, which also came through unscathed with a ninth placed finish.

In the damp of Sunday morning, McMillan was back behind the wheel for race two, starting conservatively on the semi-damp circuit to hand Richards the car in seventh place, the reigning Bathurst 1000 champion crossing the line in fourth position after charging through to finish just behind the points leading Mercedes, in the process setting the second fastest lap of the race - just under the new race lap record he had set in the opening race.

After claiming the Carrera Cup round win just moments before, Richards was back in the Interlloy Lamborghini for race three, and immediately up to speed and applying pressure to the Mercedes and Ferrari in front of him off the start.

He entered the pits for his CPS in third place allowing McMillan to rejoin in third, the team boss hanging on to claim fifth at the flag after coming under fire from Tony Quinn and 2011 race winner Klark Quinn in the dying stages.

Ross Lilley made it home in 11th, to add to his sixth placed finish in race two, and like the #48 Interlloy entry, the #63 Koala Furniture Lamborghini was in pristine condition.

“I can’t be any happier with the weekend’s result,” McMillan admitted as he accepted the pole position trophy. “We were quick, we were consistent, and we finished every race strongly. This was my first time here and I got quicker with each session, and whilst we didn’t quite reach the podium, we’ve amassed some very good points, and along with Ross, have two straight cars to put back into the transporter for the trip home!”

The team now enjoys a seven week break before the fourth round of the championship at Sydney Motorsport Park on 22-24 August, again alongside the V8 Supercars with two 30-minute races, and one 60-minute race.

The third round of the Australian GT Championship presented by Pirelli will be televised on Channel 7 in the coming weeks (time to be advised).

M-Motorsport - new car, new livery for 2014

12-months ago M-Motorsport’s Justin McMillan stood on the precipice of the biggest drive of his short motorsport career, staring down the barrel of his debut on Mount Panorama behind the wheel of one of the most ferocious GT cars in the world, the 600bhp Lamborghini Gallardo FLII.

Now, just days out from his second start at ‘the mountain’ McMillan admits that the emotions are different this time around - more akin to a kid in a lolly shop..
